For Colored Girls…

Standard

MY oh MY oh MY… I will certainly have to do a video blog of my true reaction to this film. I must say that it affected me in a sub par kind of way and it did not deeply move me or properly honor the true work of art and beauty that is the choreo poem by Ntozake. Although I did not expect much on the art piece end of the spectrum from Mr. Perry, I think he could have done himself a great service had he surrounded himself with consultants who could have helped him approach the text with a more three-dimensional world view. I read a review by Armond White that had me rolling and although it was quite a brute review it was so true. “Colored” women are not flat lined one dimensional characters and the black man is not the antagonist of the black woman’s world. This film could have reached so many heights but instead it was as shallow as a kiddie pool in an apartment complex. My litmus test was whether or not I shed a tear and I can honestly say, I did NOT. I wanted so much to feel for Kimberly Elise’s character but as a filmmaker and writer I am trained not to fall for shock for shock’s sake and Tyler Perry tried to dupe me on that one. I honestly believe that had the characters been consolidated into fewer women we could have perhaps explored the text and the stories a bit more in depth  and thus created more of a cathartic experience with the characters rather than upholstering them onto a proscenium to be chiseled down to dark aghast emotional prose. The experience of being a woman of color is spiritually expansive and deeper than the deepest ocean and it can not be properly encapsulated in a two hour film. “Being a colored woman is a metaphysical dilemma I haven’t conquered yet”, and one that Tyler Perry has unfortunately failed at conquering this time around, in my HUMBLE opinion.
